Sources

Last updated April 27, 2026

Catalogue Raisonné is built on a deep respect for art history and the scholars, institutions, and communities that have dedicated themselves to preserving and sharing it. This page outlines the sources we draw on for our content and imagery, and explains our approach to intellectual property.

Public Domain

The artworks featured on Catalogue Raisonné are, to the best of our knowledge, in the public domain. This means the works are no longer protected by copyright and are freely available for use, reproduction, and distribution. We rely on public domain material for both our written content and product development, including the artwork reproductions used on our physical products.

As a general rule, works created by artists who died more than 70 years ago are considered public domain in most jurisdictions, including Norway, the European Union and the United States. If you believe any content on our site may infringe on a copyright, please contact us at art@catraisonne.com and we will address the matter promptly.

Written Content

Our editorial content is informed by a range of authoritative art history sources. The primary references we draw on are E.H. Gombrich's 'The Story of Art', Jeremy Kingston's 'Arts and Artists', 'The Annotated Mona Lisa' by Carol Strickland and John Boswall, as well as multiple other sources found in this book list.

We also draw on Wikipedia as a supplementary reference for factual information such as dates, provenance, and biographical details. Wikipedia content is published under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 license.

Images

The artwork images used on this site are sourced primarily from Wikipedia and its sister project Wikimedia Commons, which hosts a large repository of freely licensed and public domain media.

Where possible, we use high-resolution reproductions of the original works. We do not claim ownership over any artwork reproductions. All images are used in accordance with their respective licenses or public domain status.
