Paul Gauguin
1888
Oil on canvas
Post-Impressionism
Scottish National Gallery, Edinburgh
For 11 years, from 1871 to 1882, Paul Gauguin worked as a stockbroker and businessman in Paris. He led a comfortable life with an annual income in 1879 of 30,000 francs from his job as a stockbroker (about $185,000 in 2025 USD) and almost the equivalent from dealing in the art market. But when the Parisian stock market crashed in 1882 his earnings went down with it. This is when Gauguin decided to pursue painting full-time.
