The Theatre Box by Pierre-Auguste Renoir

The Theatre Box
Pierre-Auguste Renoir
1874
Oil on canvas
Impressionism
The Courtauld, London

Renoir was an expert at painting figures, as this painting is proof of. 'The Theatre Box' gives a glimpse into what Parisian society was like in the 1800's, with the subject being a couple attending the theatre together. The woman is modelled after Nini Lopez, while the man is Renoir's brother, Edmond. A funny detail is that you can see, based on the angle of his binoculars, that he is scanning through the other attendees, rather than looking down at the stage.
