The Austrian painter Oskar Kokoschka was a key figure in the Expressionist movement of the early 20th century. Like Egon Schiele, Kokoschka was influenced by Gustav Klimt and the Vienna Secession but moved away from the elegant Art Nouveau style in favor of emotionally intense art, characterized by rough brushstrokes, bold colors, and distorted forms.
