Hans Memling was born around 1430, in the Middle Rhine region of what was then the Holy Roman Empire and later moved to the Flemish city of Bruges, where he became a prominent and wealthy citizen. His style is characterized by beautifully detailed portrait paintings and depictions of religious subjects. His works follow the Flemish tradition, showing influences from masters such as Jan van Eyck and Rogier van der Weyden. As a matter of fact, Memling was an apprentice under Rogier van der Weyden, early in his career.
