Claude Monet
1868-1869
Oil on canvas
Impressionism
Musée d'Orsay
One of approximately 140 snowscapes painted by Monet, 'The Magpie' perfectly captures the afternoon sun casting its shadows. In fact this painting is one of the early examples of Monet's use of 'colored shadows', a technique which aims to represent light and shadow as it is actually perceived, instead of being represented only as black or a shade of grey, as was the academic convention.
