Munch stored many of his paintings outdoors, remarking that 'it does them good to fend for themselves'. The result has been damages from weather and animals, such as water damages, salt stains and bird poop. Although it adds to the dramatic effect that Munch's paintings already are famous for, the harsh treatment can create headaches for the conservation work, such as distinguishing between what is intentional damage and what is unintentional, or having to find creative and innovative ways to undo damage done by the rough Norwegian climate.
