The Garden of Earthly Delights by Hieronymus Bosch

The Garden of Earthly Delights
Hieronymus Bosch
c. 1495-1505
Oil on panel
Northern Renaissance
Museo del Prado

Not much is know of Hieronymus Bosch's life, but we do know he left some incredible art. His paintings, usually oil on oak wood panels, are packed with symbols and allegory, depicting fantastical animals and figures that would take a vivid imagination to come up with. Of the about 25 paintings accredited to Bosch, 16 are triptychs, paintings spread across three panels with hinges between them, allowing for opening and closing of the panels. 'The Garden of Earthly Delights' is one of these triptychs, and shows, from left to right, the Garden of Eden, the Garden of Earthly Delights, and Hell. The exterior displays the creation of Earth.
