Edvard Munch lived in Berlin for a few years in the 1890s. He first moved there after being invited to an exhibition in 1892 at the Verein Berliner Künstler (Association of Berlin Artists). However, his expressive paintings were met with ridicule and repulsion by the shocked audience because they thought they looked unpleasant and unfinished, and the exhibition was shut down after just a few days. The boycott of his exhibition would be dubbed "The Munch Affair", and even though you would think it was a blow to his self-esteem, he actually later remarked, "Never have I had such an amusing time — it's incredible that something as innocent as painting should have created such a stir.". Ironically, the exhibition made Munch even more famous in the Berlin art scene, and he would hold a new exhibition the following year.
