Berthe Morisot
1872
Oil on canvas
Impressionism
Musée d'Orsay
An incredibly serene and peaceful scene of Berthe Morisot's older sister Edma Portillon watching over her sleeping daughter Blanche. This painting was in fact displayed at the first Impressionist exhibition in 1874, but failed to be sold. Not being able to sell it, Morisot eventually gave it to her sister, who later would pass it on to her daughter, Blanche, who was Morisot's niece and the depicted sleeping baby. In 1930 the painting was acquired by the Louvre, and is now part of the permanent exhibition at the Musée d'Orsay.
