Karl Schmidt-Rottluff was a German expressionist painter and printmaker, best known as one of the founding members of the influential artist group Die Brücke (The Bridge). His work is characterized by bold colors, simplified forms, and powerful contrasts, often conveying emotional intensity rather than naturalistic detail. Over his long career, he created striking woodcuts and paintings that reflected both the vibrant energy of early expressionism and later spiritual, almost abstract tendencies. Persecuted during the Nazi regime, when his art was labeled "degenerate," Schmidt-Rottluff nevertheless continued working after World War II, becoming an important figure in postwar German art and a mentor to the coming generation of artists.
