John Constable was a brilliant landscape painter, and one of his most celebrated works is this painting of Salisbury Cathedral. It was a commissioned work, by one of Constable's close friends, the Bishop of Salisbury, John Fisher. John Fisher was well-connected, with ties directly to the royal family, and became Constable's most important patron. John Fisher, together with his wife, is actually painted into this image, in the lower left corner.
