Portrait of Innocent X by Diego Velázquez

Portrait of Innocent X
Diego Velázquez
c. 1650
Oil on canvas
Baroque
Galleria Doria Pamphilj, Rome

Painting the portrait of one of the most powerful men at the time, Pope Innocent X, with such realism took guts from Velázquez. The result was an absolute masterpiece of a portrait! The Pope, initially uncertain of Velázquez and his skills, liked the finished work, apparently exclaiming 'It's too true! It's too true!'.
