Paul Cézanne was childhood friends with Émile Zola, the French writer famously known for his open letter on the Dreyfus affair, headlined 'J'Accuse...!'. However the two fell out after Zola published the book 'L'Œuvre' ('The Masterpiece'), a story about a failing painter, which Cézanne saw as a thinly veiled critique to his career and life as an atist.
