Ophelia by John Everett Millais

Ophelia
John Everett Millais
c. 1851
Oil on canvas
Pre-Raphaelite
Tate Britain

The Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, a British society of painters, were of the opinion that art had taken a wrong turn. While the Academies were still painting in the tradition of Raphael, the so-called 'Grand Manner', this group wanted to return to painting the world as they believed it to be true. To them it was unacceptable to strive for beauty at the expense of truth.
