J.M.W. Turner
c. 1845
Oil on canvas
Romanticism
Tate Britain, London
A student at the Royal Academy, Turner quickly developed his unique style, which in part broke with the academic style of the time. Experimenting with the effects of sunlight on the atmosphere, blizzards, storms, and seascapes, there are a lot of similarities between Turner and the later French Impressionists. It is interesting that Turner was mostly well-received by art critics at the time, while 30-40 years later the French group would be mocked for their diffuse painting style.
