Lamentation by Giotto

Lamentation
Giotto
c. 1304-1306
Fresco
Proto-Renaissance
Scrovegni Chapel, Padua, Italy

Throughout the Middle Ages artists were mainly concerned with depicting stories from the Bible, and the realism of the subjects or vividness of the scene were not as important as the educative value the images had on the peasant believers. When Giotto emerged in Florence in the later half of the 1200's, he revolutionized painting forever, adding both space and perspective to his paintings, while also being able to create emotion and dramatic effects to his scenes like none had seen before.
