Vincent van Gogh
1888
Oil on canvas
Post-Impressionism
In February of 1888, van Gogh moved to Arles with a vision to create an art colony, where like-minded artists could stay and find their creativity together. His excitement is apparent in one of his letters, where he writes 'the zouaves, the brothels, the adorable little Arlésienne going to her First Communion, the priest in his surplice, who looks like a dangerous rhinoceros, the people drinking absinthe, all seem to me creatures from another world.'
