Flower Garden (without Figure) by Emil Nolde

Flower Garden (without Figure)
Emil Nolde
c. 1908
Oil on canvas
Expressionism

Emil Nolde was another notable figure in German Expressionism. Similar to Franz Marc, Nolde's work is celebrated for its vibrant use of color and emotional intensity. Although Nolde is regarded as a key figure in the development of modern art, his legacy is not without controversy, as he was an early supporter of the Nazi regime, hoping they might revive German cultural identity. Ironically, the Nazis later denounced Nolde's art as 'degenerate,' along with the works of many other Expressionists.
