c. 1873-1875
Oil on canvas
Impressionism
Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum
Although closely associated with the Impressionist group, Cézanne actually only exhibited works in the first and third exhibitions. Before the first exhibition, some exhibitors were concerned about Cézanne's participation, because of his bold style of painting. Manet even declined participation because he thought "Cézanne is a mason who paints with a trowel". But Pissarro, whom Cézanne greatly admired, made sure that Cézanne would be able to exhibit his works along side the rest of the group.
