The Norwegian Impressionist Frits Thaulow was remarkable at painting textures — sand, dirt, snow, ice, and water all come alive in his works. Thaulow wasn’t just one of the most notable Norwegian Impressionists (and painters in general), he also played a key role as a connector between Norwegian artists of the late 1800s and early 1900s and their French contemporaries. In fact, when Thaulow married Ingeborg Charlotte Gad in 1874, he became the brother-in-law of Paul Gauguin, who had married Charlotte’s sister the year before, and while in France, Thaulow became close friends with figures like Claude Monet and Auguste Rodin — artists whose influence is clearly felt in his work.
