Georges Seurat
1884-1886
Oil on canvas
Pointilism
Art Institute of Chicago
Perhaps the most famous example of Pointilism is this masterpiece by Georges Seurat. Seurat preferred the term Divisionism to Pointilism. Both terms are descriptive to the technique, where the artist uses separate dots of color to form a complete picture. Said effect becomes even more impressive in this painting when realizing it is huge, measuring more than 2 by 3 meters.
