Edvard Munch's later version of the death scene of Jean-Paul Marat bears little resemblance to the neoclassical painting by Jacques-Louis David. The expressionist style of Munch focuses less on light and shadow, and has not the level of detail of David. For Munch, projecting his psychological and emotional pain was perhaps more important than the political statement David emphasized. Another interesting aspect is that Munch has chosen to include the assassin, Charlotte Corday, and she is painted in a way that reminds us of Tulla Larsen, a woman Munch was engaged to marry, but would end up beaking up with.
