Highly talented, and close friends with figures like Manet, Monet, Renoir and Sisley, Frédéric Bazille was one of the founding fathers of Impressionism. His life was tragically short, as he died on the battlefield at the age of 28, in November 1870, just a few months after finishing this painting.
