When Will You Marry? by Paul Gauguin

When Will You Marry?
Paul Gauguin
1892
Oil on canvas
Post-Impressionism

'When Will You Marry?' was painted during Gauguin's first visit to Tahiti. Gauguin left Europe in 1891, fed up with European society, hoping to find authenticity and simplicity in Tahitian life. Arriving in Tahiti, he was quickly disappointed to find that colonial France had severely altered the life and culture of the island. The painting, which shows two young women—one in traditional dress and the other in a Western-style garment—captures this tension between cultures.
