This painting is from the birthplace of Camille Pissarro, the caribbean island of St. Thomas, where he was born 10 July 1830. His parents were part of the Jewish community on the island, which was small, but significant. His mother, Rachel Manzano-Pomié, was born on St. Thomas, while his father, Frederick Abraham Gabriel Pissarro, had moved there from Bordeaux to work as a merchant.
