Associated with the pre-Raphaelite movement, Edmund Blair Leighton painted with an astonishing realism and beauty. He received his art education at Heatherly School of Fine Art in London, and later at the acclaimed Royal Academy of Arts. He started his career as a painter creating black-and-white illustrations for magazines, but later focused his work on oil paintings of incredible quality. Among them this painting of a young couple getting their marriage formalized.
