Another brilliant example of the Realist movement. Gustave Courbet's 'the Stone Breakers' met a lot of the same criticism as 'the Gleaners' by Jean-François Millet, with the both the subject and technical execution being put under scrutiny. This painting is unfortunately lost to us forever, as it was destroyed during the Allied bombing of the city of Dresden during World War II.
