Caspar David Friedrich
1823-1824
Oil on canvas
Romanticism
Kunsthalle Hamburg
Having never visited the Arctic, Caspar David Friedrich still manages to represent it with all its dramatic effect in ’The Sea of Ice’. Remembering that photography as we know it today had not yet been invented, it would actually be another 70 years before photos appeared daily in newspapers, we must admire Friedrich’s imagination and ability in painting this icy landscape. The extra dramatic effect is added when we notice the shipwreck in the background on the right-hand side.
