Albrecht Altdorfer
1529
Oil on panel
Early Renaissance, Danube School
Alte Pinakothek, Munich
Albrecht Altdorfer was a pioneer in landscape painting, which this painting of a landscape containing Alexander the Great’s victory at the battle of Issus in 333 BC is a great example of. Together with Lucas Cranach the Elder and Wolf Huber, Altdorfer was a member of the Danube School, a collective of artists mainly focused on pure landscape painting, or landscapes such as this with biblical or historical subjects interacting with the scene.
