Another pioneer of landscape painting as a genre in its own right, was the Flemish painter Joachim Patinir, a contemporary of Albrecht Altdorfer discussed in my last post. Patinir is often credited with inventing what we call the ‘world landscape’, paintings that seemed to contain endless scenery of green pastures, rivers, woods and mountains. ‘The Battle of Alexander at Issus’ is another great example of a ‘world landscape’.
