Pyramid of Skulls by Paul Cézanne

Pyramid of Skulls
Paul Cézanne
1901
Oil on canvas
Post-Impressionism

Paul Cézanne died on 22 October in 1906, at the age of 67. Towards the end of his life, he became more and more preoccupied with death and his own mortality, which also gradually became evident from his work. During his last few years he produced a series of still lifes containing skulls, a theme we recognize from the vanitas genre of earlier painters.
