Born into a wealthy wine merchant family, Frédéric Bazille was originally set out to become a doctor. He started his studies of medicine in 1859, and as part of his studies moved to Paris in 1862, where he met Renoir and Sisley. Through his new friends, Bazille discovered Impressionist painting, and after failing his exams in 1864, he went on to paint full-time.
