Expressionism
The story of Amedeo Modigliani is short and tragic. The Italian painter and sculptor died at the age of 35 due to tuberculous meningitis, after a life of substance abuse poverty and health issues. He would remain quite unknown during his lifetime, but is now considered one of the greatest masters of modern art and expressionism. This painting of a reclining nude is one of the most expensive paintings ever sold at an auction, fetching an incredible $170 million.
