Painted while living in France, ‘I and the Village’ is Chagall’s way to pay homage to his hometown just outside of Vitebsk in the Russian Empire (now Belarus). Chagall represents both his imagination and memories using Cubist techniques, and includes elements from folklore taken from his Belarusian and Jewish upbringing.
