Winslow Homer is one of the most celebrated American artists, and famous for his skillful representations of life, nature and the sea. He was largely self-taught, and started his artistic career as a freelance illustrator for different magazines, creating illustrations of life in Boston, the rural life of New England, and the life of the soldiers of the Civil War. After nearly twenty years as an illustrator, Homer picked up oil painting and began to create works that explored humanity's relationship with nature, among them his iconic seascapes.
