Mary Cassatt painted this portrait of a Torero – a Spanish bullfighter – during her brief stay in Spain in 1873. She travelled to Spain to study the masters of the Renaissance and Baroque, and we can see some of her inspiration from the Old Masters in the chiaroscuro and composition in this painting.
