The genre painter Gerard ter Borch was highly influential on his contemporaries, among them Johannes Vermeer. Art historian Arthur K. Wheelock Jr. sums up this influence and the meaning of genre painting well in saying that ter Borch "established a new framework for subject matter, taking people into the sanctum of the home".
